RESEARCH REVIEW OF FISH SPECIES DIVERSITY IN TAIWAN STRAIT

  • Taiwan Strait that locates between Fujian Province and Taiwan Island has a unique and high diversity of fish species due to its special marine environment. We summarized the history and achievements of the diversity of fish species in Taiwan Strait in this paper. A series number of studies on diversity of marine species from home and abroad have been carried out since the 20th century. The history of the diversity of fish species on Taiwan Strait can be divided into four parts: Early Research Period, Start Research Period, Systematic Investigation Period, and Comprehen sive Research Period. The studies of China mainland indicate that the fish number of Taiwan Strait is 1390, while of Taiwan is 1525. The total fish species of Taiwan Strait is 1697. Most fish species of Taiwan Strait belong to India-Western Pacific warm water region: China to Japan sub-region and India-Malaysia sub-region, which are tropical and sub-tropical intertwined characteristics. We should strengthen the collaboration research of the diversity of fish species in Taiwan Strait and take advantage of database in the accumulation of fish biodiversity materials.
