EXPERIMENT ON THE TRANSPLANTATION OF POND SMELT, HYPOMESUS OLIDUS (PALLAS)

  • The introduction of pond smelt from Shuifeng 'Reservoir (Yalu River drainage) into Tureen Reservoir (Dayanghe River drainage) was carried out during 1984--1985. 25 millions of artificially fertilized eggs of the fish were introduced. The fertilization rate of the eggs was 60.3%, the survival rate of eyed eggs was 100% and the hatching rate of the fertilized egg was 56.4% in average. In addition, 2200 adult fish were transplanted inte Tureen Reservoir.A population of this fish appeared in the autumn of 1985 in Tumen Reservoir and a fish yield of 5900 Kg. was obtained in the spring of 1986. Moreover, 100 millions of artificial fertilized eggs were obtained in March of 1986 and the fertilization rate of eggs averaged 76.2% and the hatching rate of fertilized eggs averaged 77.3%.In Tureen Reservoir one-year-old individual of this fish is about 100 mm in body length and 8.84 g. in body weight. Similar to that of Shuifeng Reservoir, pond smelt in Tumen Reservoir is omnivorous, feeding mainly on cladocerans and copepods. The individual absolute fecundity of one-year-old fish in Tureen Reservoir is 7075 eggs in average being higher than that of fish living in Shuifeng Reservoir.Population structure and resource management of the introduced pond smelt and its ecological effect in the Tureen Reservoir are also discussed.
