ON FISHES OF ICHANG, WITH NOTES ON THEIR DISTRIBUTION IN THE YANGTZE RIVER

  • This work is based on a collection made by the writer in 1954 at Ichang. A total of 72 species, all known to science, are reported, of which 44 are recorded for the first time for that locality. A review of the distribution of these species in the Yangtze River shows that while many are of wide occurrence, there are a number of species which were known to occur only in Upper Yangtze, and still more were known to have a distribution limited to the lower and middle parts of the River. In view of this fact the writer is of the opinion that Ichang probably represents the border between the two faunal sub-areas of which our ichthyologists and zoogeographers have been aware.
